The Barneys New York shopping experience is one of a kind. A carefully selected range of designers curated throughout iconic locations in cities like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago make Barneys New York a fashion destination admired by many. We recently caught up with New York City-based Marina Larroudé, the VP Fashion Director of Barneys New York, to learn about her background, work-life balance, and her favourite aspect of working at Barneys.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into fashion?

I always knew I wanted to work in fashion, but I thought that meant I had to be a fashion designer. As I was starting college, I realised that wasn't something I was interested in so I started a work-study gig at Brazilian Vogue in hopes of becoming an editor.

After I graduated from college, I spent a year abroad in Paris studying French and trying to figure out how I wanted my life to take shape. I eventually made it to New York and took classes at Parsons and FIT to learn about different parts of the industry like merchandising and marketing. I was eventually hired for my first job in New York at Alice Temperley. I’ve done it all by now – retail, wholesale, PR, editorial, both print and digital. Ever since my first summer job when I was 16 years old. I’ve never stopped. One job always led to the next.

What does a typical day in the life look like for the Fashion Director at Barneys?

What I enjoy the most about my role at Barneys is how dynamic it is. I can start the day checking out a new brand and my next meeting could be with the digital team to promote a collection we currently carry. Then, I can go from a fitting for our Private Label Barneys New York Collection to overseeing a photoshoot for our mailer. There is never time to be bored. I’m constantly challenged.

What does work-life balance mean to you? How do you like to spend your downtime?

It means a lot. I’m lucky that I love what I do, so my hours at the office are always very pleasant. I go home at a decent hour to spend time with the kids, I put them to sleep and I do a last glance at emails before bed. Even if I’m not at the office, I’m always reachable. To make sure I have my dose of personal time, I wake up at 5:30 AM on weekdays to workout. That’s my ME time. It’s the only time I can completely disconnect. I do Tracy Anderson four days a week and I run the other days. No one is calling or emailing me at 6 AM, my kids are sleeping, so that’s my personal quality time to myself. My dose of mental health!

How are you continuing to shape the fashion landscape of Barneys?

I’m constantly searching for new brands to bring on board. I’m always thinking about new content ideas to promote the designers we currently have. Every day I ask myself, what is the future of fashion? What are the new pop-ups and collaborations we should start working on? How can we improve? I challenge myself daily on how to improve and make it better.
